History of Gunung Kawi Temple in Bali

Gunung Kawi is a cultural heritage and tourist attraction in Bali. The building on Gunung Kawi Temple Bali, is a temple building that was built in the 11th century. Its location is near the Pakerisan river, in the Tampak Siring area which is in the northeast of Ubud‘s tourist attractions.

At Gunung Kawi, there are 10 temples carved into a rock cliff at a height of 8 meters. Previously the function of this temple was a place to worship the king Udayana Warmadewa. The interpretation of the function of this temple is based on an inscription found at the Mount Kawi tourist spot in Bali.

 

Three Groups of Temples

There are three groups of temples in the Gunung Kawi tourist spot, namely the Lima temple group. It is called the five temples, because there are five temples carved on the east side of the cliff and the five temples face west. Candi Lima is dedicated to King Udayana and Anak Wungsu and their families.

The second group is called four temples, located in the western part of the Gunung Kawi tourist spot. Temple four is dedicated to Anak Wungsu’s concubine. While in the southwest there is 1 temple or the tenth temple. This tenth temple is dedicated to the prime minister who served in Anak Wungsu’s government.

 

Dress Code Entering the Gunung Kawi Temple Tourism Object

Every temple in Bali that you want to enter, it is mandatory for every guest to use a sarong and shawl tied at the waist. You can buy scarves and sarongs, or you can rent them at the ticket booth. Some temple attractions in Bali provide free sarongs + shawls, and some places have to pay.

Gunung Kawi Temple is the oldest and largest ancient monument in Bali. The shrine is located at the bottom of a river valley surrounded by green trees. Because the location of the temple is in a valley, you have to go down 272 steps from the entrance ticket counter.
